Public Interest Commissioner Kevin Brezinski released the 2025–2026 Annual Report, which features stories of the office’s investigations and recaps a year with significant moments and milestones.

The Commissioner’s office recorded a total of 269 cases, the highest number in its 13-year history. Total cases received were up 12% over the previous year and 86% since 2022–2023, when Mr. Brezinski took office. Of the year’s cases, 118 were disclosures alleging wrongdoing, and 19 were complaints of reprisal.
The office reports further statistical information about the cases, as well as business plan highlights such as outreach efforts and examples of helping designated officers at public sector entities effectively administer the Public Interest Disclosure (Whistleblower Protection) Act (the Act).
The 2025–2026 Annual Report recaps the year’s key investigations into allegations of wrongdoing and reprisal submitted by Alberta’s public sector employees. Outcomes of these investigations include recommendations for improvement, amendments to policies and procedures, and authorities receiving guidance from the Commissioner’s office.
The annual report includes a feature article focusing on an Alberta Court of Appeal ruling that generated national interest and reinforced the importance of confidentiality as a method of protecting whistleblowers.
New this year, the Commissioner introduces the Whistleblower Protection Excellence Award, which recognizes the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology for their exceptional efforts in developing and implementing a strong and effective whistleblower protection program.
The report also includes a recap of the Act’s legislative review, overseen by the Standing Committee on Resource Stewardship, which yielded 13 recommendations designed to strengthen the Act.
