Whistleblower Awareness Day / Journée des lanceurs d’alerte
Tuesday, March 24 is Whistleblower Awareness Day, an occasion created in 2021 by a consortium of Canadian public integrity organizations—including Alberta’s Public Interest Commissioner—to raise awareness about the importance of whistleblowers in establishing and maintaining trust in public institutions.
In Alberta, whistleblower rights are enshrined in the Public Interest Disclosure (Whistleblower Protection) Act (the Act), which was established in 2013 and applies to the province’s public sector. The Act is subject to mandatory legislative review every five years, a process recently concluded by the Standing Committee on Resource Stewardship.
This year’s Whistleblower Awareness Day takes place amid ongoing changes in Alberta’s healthcare sector.
“Whistleblowers make the workplace better for everyone, which is why it is essential that organizations protect them. This Whistleblower Awareness Day, I want all Alberta public sector employees, including those employed by the province’s newly restructured healthcare sector, to know that they are protected under the law.”
– Kevin Brezinski, Alberta’s Public Interest Commissioner
For this year’s Whistleblower Awareness Day, the office of the Public Interest Commissioner has published a series of information sheets designed to educate stakeholders about what they can expect in the event of a public interest disclosure investigation.
