About Us

In Alberta, the positions of the Alberta Ombudsman and Public Interest Commissioner are held by the same person with the main office located in Edmonton.

The Alberta Ombudsman provides oversight of the provincial government to ensure fair treatment through independent investigations, recommendations and education within Alberta government authorities, professional organizations, municipalities, and the Patient Concerns Resolution Process of Alberta Health Services. Under the authority of the Ombudsman Act, the Ombudsman can investigate written complaints received from any individual or group or commence an investigation on his own motion or at the request of a Minister.

Under the authority of the Public Interest Disclosure (Whistleblower Protection) Act (the Act), the Public Interest Commissioner oversees the disclosure and investigation of serious and significant wrongdoings in or relating to departments, public entities, offices of the Legislature and political offices, that are unlawful, dangerous to the public or injurious to the public interest. The Act protects employees who make those disclosures, and the Commissioner is also responsible for investigating complaints where employees allege reprisal action has been taken against them.

The offices of the Ombudsman and Public Interest Commissioner (the Offices) are legislative offices, operating independently from the Alberta government, political parties, and individual elected officials.
