Communications Manager, Ombudsman / Public Interest Commissioner

– The Alberta Ombudsman provides oversight of the provincial government to ensure fair treatment through independent investigations, recommendations and education within Alberta government authorities, professional organizations and the patient concerns resolution process of Alberta Health Services. The Public Interest Commissioner oversees the disclosure and investigation of significant and serious matters in or relating to departments, public entities or offices of the Legislature. The Commissioner’s office ensures processes are in place to facilitate the disclosure and investigation of disclosures where an employee believes they may be unlawful, dangerous to the public or injurious to the public interest, and to protect employees who make those disclosures.

The Communications Manager for the offices of the Ombudsman and Public Interest Commissioner will act as the key resource for public and internal communications, develop strategic communications plans and provide advice and consultation to staff in all aspects of communication.

For success in the position, you must possess strong communication skills in brand, written, media relations, crisis communications, issues management, communications planning and publication of corporate communications materials. The incumbent must have excellent knowledge of writing styles, including principles of plain language and Canadian Press style guides, to prepare and edit a variety of written materials, including speeches, annual reports and briefing materials.  Knowledge of the various stakeholder groups, including government programs, and related trends and directions is required.  You will need to have experience working with people of varied backgrounds and demonstrate sound judgement.  A strong and diverse communications background will help ensure your success.

 

Qualifications: University graduate in a field related to the position, supplemented by three years’ experience.  Related experience or education may be considered as an equivalency.  Strong critical thinking, organization and interpersonal skills are required.  Excellent knowledge of different communication tools and products such as brand methodology, media relations, social media, advertising, print and graphic design.  Well-developed computer skills in MS Office and social media platforms are essential.

Bi-weekly Salary Range: $3,062.51 – $4,121.25

Annual Salary Range: $79,931.51 – $107,564.62
